The unpredictability of divorce

On Behalf of | May 12, 2022 | Divorce

The end of a marriage represents a quantum shift in the lives of soon-to-be ex-spouses and their children. The divorce process is both legally complex and emotionally challenging. Life is changing, and everyone impacted by the split faces an uncertain future.

Along the way to dissolving a marriage, certain surprises may catch you off guard.

Costs

Divorce proceedings can be expensive. However, once that bill is paid, the financial challenges remain. One household becomes two with separate expenses. Instead of effectively paying half for utilities, the bill may be double what you are accustomed to. Spousal and child support help, but the overall higher cost of living can impact any household budget. Children of divorce may feel the pain as well as the increasing costs in the form of fees for school sports and activities that may not be fiscally possible.

Managing the household

Running a household solo is a never-ending responsibility. Particular challenges exist for the spouse who held a full-time job as they are unaccustomed to the routine that can quickly turn into chaos. Cooking, feeding, bathing, brushing teeth, and laundry are only the beginning. You are effectively on your own to track school events and hurriedly drive to sporting competitions. Simply put, you alone will be on call day and night when your children are in your custody.

Looking for love

The mere notion of dating makes any spouse apprehensive about moving on. Services, websites, and apps provide a bevy of options. Those who divorce later in life may become overwhelmed with the sheer number of services and those that sign up for them. Getting out to meet someone also creates challenges when it comes to balancing home life with socializing. While the experience has its rewards, it also has risks. In the end, recommendations from friends and neighbors may be the best, if not the safest, route.
