What to do after receiving the final divorce decree

On Behalf of | Jun 11, 2024 | Divorce

Once you receive your final divorce decree, you may wonder, “What’s next?” This is a good question.

Here, you will find several steps to take after receiving this document.

Review the decree

Once you receive the final divorce decree, it’s crucial to thoroughly review the document. Ensure that all the terms and conditions discussed and agreed upon during the divorce process are accurately reflected in the decree.

Check for details regarding property division, child custody, support arrangements and other agreed-upon terms. If you find any discrepancies, it’s important to address them promptly.

Update legal documents and accounts

After confirming the decree’s accuracy, update your legal documents and accounts to reflect your new status. This includes changing the name on your Social Security card, driver’s license, passport and any other identification, if applicable.

Notify your employer, bank, insurance companies and other relevant institutions about your marital status change. Update your will, power of attorney and other estate planning documents to ensure they align with your new situation.

Finalize financial matters

Divorce often brings significant financial changes. Open new bank accounts if needed and separate joint accounts as outlined in the divorce decree. Update your beneficiaries on insurance policies, retirement accounts, and investment portfolios. Ensure that any court-ordered payments, such as child support or alimony, are set up correctly and that you have a system for making or receiving these payments.

Take this time to set new personal and professional goals. Reflect on what you want your life to look like moving forward and start making plans to achieve those goals. Whether it’s focusing on your career, pursuing new hobbies or planning for future relationships, having a clear direction can help you move forward positively.
